According to reports from Pakistani media, Lahore authorities detained Aleema Khan under Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance. Dunya News reported that she was taken into custody in Lahore and shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail, while her vehicle was taken to Mozang police station.

The News reported that a formal 30-day detention order was issued by the Lahore deputy commissioner after police recommended preventive detention.

Reuters reported that Aleema Khan was arrested by police at her residence in Lahore, citing a PTI spokesperson in Punjab. Reuters said there had been no official comment from government representatives or police in response to its inquiries at the time of publication.

The varying accounts of where she was taken into custody reflect the information available from different sources. PTI and family-linked reports have also described the detention in connection with her activities and the party’s planned political mobilisation.

PTI Demands Immediate Release

PTI condemned Aleema Khan’s detention and demanded her immediate release. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, in a post on X, warned the government against detaining Aleema Khan under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law, saying such a move would further fuel confrontation.

A special team comprising doctors from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Shifa Eye Hospital visited the prison on Sunday to examine the former prime minister. According to jail sources cited by Geo News, the examination included checks of his blood pressure, cholesterol and eyesight.

The medical team was led by PIMS doctor Arif Khan and was assisted by staff from the Adiala Jail hospital. Other reports said the doctors conducted a comprehensive assessment before leaving the prison. The latest examination comes after earlier medical assessments and amid continuing claims from Khan’s family and PTI about his health and access to specialist treatment.

Health Concerns Surrounding Imran Khan

A major concern raised by Khan’s family and legal team has been his eyesight. A previous medical assessment reported that Khan had central retinal vein occlusion, or CRVO, a condition affecting blood flow through a retinal vein. A medical board examined him at Adiala Jail in March following Islamabad High Court directions.

PTI and Khan’s family have alleged that his medical treatment has been inadequate and have raised concerns about his right-eye vision. Those claims have been disputed by Pakistani authorities.

There have also been disagreements over the scope and location of Khan’s medical examinations. In August, Khan was taken to PIMS rather than Shifa International Hospital, where he underwent an examination involving specialists including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician. The government subsequently said he was “medically fit”.

PTI has separately questioned why a recommended CT angiography of Khan’s heart was not completed during that hospital visit and demanded that the test be conducted at Shifa International Hospital.

Political Tensions Remain

Aleema Khan’s detention adds another point of tension between PTI and Pakistan’s authorities as the party seeks to maintain pressure over Imran Khan’s imprisonment and political demands.

PTI leaders have warned of further political action over her detention, while the party continues to insist that its planned Islamabad march will remain peaceful.

The development also comes after months of disputes over access to Imran Khan, restrictions on PTI activities and his treatment in custody. Khan remains imprisoned at Adiala Jail while his party continues its political campaign for his release.
