Visitors at one of China's most popular glass attractions were evacuated after a teenager allegedly cracked a glass panel of the viewing platform using an umbrella. The incident occurred on June 20 at the Baoquan Cliff World Scenic Area in central China's Henan province, prompting staff to clear the platform as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
Officials later clarified that although the damage appeared alarming, only the top protective layer of a single glass panel was affected. According to reports, the teenage boy allegedly jabbed the glass floor several times with the pointed end of his umbrella shortly after stepping onto the observation platform. Staff noticed a visible crack in one of the glass panels and immediately evacuated visitors from the attraction. The evacuation was carried out within minutes to ensure public safety while officials assessed the damage.
Only Top Protective Layer Was Damaged
The incident drew widespread attention because the platform is engineered to withstand significant weight and accommodates hundreds of visitors daily. According to the South China Morning Post, officials explained that the observation deck is constructed using triple-laminated safety glass, consisting of multiple layers designed to provide strength and protection. A spokesperson for the scenic area said the umbrella cracked only the top protective layer of a single glass panel. Officials said the glass functioned as intended by preventing the damage from affecting the platform's structural integrity.
According to the South China Morning Post, management has contacted the original manufacturer to procure a replacement panel with the same specifications and materials.
The scenic area also plans to strengthen visitor awareness by reminding tourists not to strike or poke the glass surface with objects such as umbrellas. Officials have maintained that the incident did not pose any public safety risk.
Popular Tourist Attraction
The incident attracted significant attention because it occurred at one of China's best-known tourist destinations. According to the South China Morning Post, the Baoquan Cliff World Scenic Area received China's National 5A Tourist Attraction status in 2024, the country's highest tourism rating.
Unlike a suspended glass bridge, the attraction features a large glass-floored observation platform overlooking the Taihang Mountains, offering visitors panoramic views and the experience of standing hundreds of metres above the landscape.
