A remote village in western Kenya’s West Pokot County has seen an influx of thousands of hopeful prospectors after an accidental gold discovery triggered a sudden rush to the area. The frenzy began when Manse Lomachar, a 33-year-old local goat herder, stumbled upon three grams of gold while searching for a stray animal. Lomachar sold the find for roughly 36,000 Kenyan shillings (approx. $280)—a significant sum in a region where farming yields uncertain income and grass-thatched homes dominate the

rural landscape. Word of the earnings quickly spread, drawing an estimated 10,000 people at its peak from across Kenya and neighboring Uganda to the once-quiet grazing lands of Cheporor.

While crowd numbers have since leveled off to around 2,500, the landscape has been noticeably altered. Swaths of land are now covered in deep pits and soil mounds as prospectors dig with picks and shovels. Many of the prospectors are local farmers, students trying to raise money for upcoming school fees, and experienced small-scale miners attempting to break into rock layers for larger deposits. Nearby rivers are filled with workers, predominantly women, carefully panning and washing muddy sediment.Gold Rush After ‘Chhaava’ in Burhanpur: Villagers Dig Fields Near Madhya Pradesh’s Asirgarh Fort To Excavate Mughal-Era Gold Coins After Watching Vicky Kaushal’s Movie; Video Surfaces.

The sudden influx has spurred informal economic activity, with over 200 makeshift businesses springing up to sell food, water, and basic supplies to the miners. However, local authorities face growing logistical and health concerns. The area lacks piped water, basic sanitation, and adequate shelter, forcing many miners to sleep under trees in difficult conditions. Officials have deployed health workers to monitor for potential disease outbreaks and increased security patrols to protect women and girls at the remote site.

Whether the movement represents a lasting boom or a temporary spike remains uncertain. Authorities have collected rock and soil samples from the excavation sites and sent them to nearby Ortum for technical testing. The results will determine the commercial viability of the deposit and whether Cheporor holds enough reserves to support sustained mining.
