Robot Vacuum Catches Wife’s Affair in Taiwan, but Husband Ends Up Behind Bars

A man in Taiwan who used a robot vacuum cleaner to catch his wife allegedly having an affair won a civil lawsuit against her and the other man, but his victory came at a steep price. He was later sentenced to five months in prison for secretly recording the intimate footage without consent.

According to a recently released court ruling cited by local media, the man married his wife in 2021 and lived with his parents. The couple mainly used their holiday home during vacations. His suspicions reportedly began in September 2023 after he discovered a used toothbrush at the property and later spotted an unfamiliar man in parking garage surveillance footage.

Man Uses Robot Vacuum To Record Wife

Instead of simply speaking to his wife, the man used the vacuum's live feed to observe what was happening inside the property. The camera allegedly captured his wife in an intimate situation with another man. He recorded the footage and later submitted it as evidence in a civil lawsuit.

The husband initially sought NT$2 million, or around Rs 60 lakh, in damages, arguing that his wife's relationship with the other man violated his marital rights. Robot Vacuum Evidence Lands Husband In Trouble

However, the man's use of the footage triggered a separate legal case. His wife accused him of secretly recording private images without her consent.

The husband argued that the recording was justified because the footage had been accepted as evidence in the civil proceedings. The court rejected the argument, ruling that marital obligations do not override an individual's right to privacy.

The court also found that the recording was deliberate. Any lights or voice notifications generated by the robot vacuum did not establish that the woman knew she was being recorded or had consented to the surveillance.

Taiwan Man Sentenced To Five Months In Prison

The man was ultimately sentenced to five months in prison and fined NT$150,000, or around Rs 4.5 lakh, for unlawfully recording private images.

Under Taiwanese law, secretly recording or disclosing another person's private activities or intimate information without authorisation can carry a prison sentence of up to three years and a fine of up to NT$300,000, or around Rs 9 lakh.

The case highlights the legal limits of using covert surveillance to gather evidence, even when the person recording it believes they have uncovered marital infidelity. In this case, the court treated the alleged affair and the husband's method of obtaining evidence as two separate legal issues.
