Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former emir of Qatar who spearheaded the nation's rapid transformation from a quiet Gulf state into an influential global center for diplomacy, media, and international investment, has died at the age of 74.

While his diplomatic strategies frequently assisted Western allies, his independent alignments also caused friction. Under his rule, Qatar maintained diplomatic and economic relations with Iran-with whom it shares a massive offshore gas field-and provided a platform for groups such as Hamas and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Breaking Succession Traditions

In June 2013, Sheikh Hamad made the rare move of voluntarily abdicating the throne, handing power over to his son, the current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
