A 28-year-old researcher has died after developing severe pneumonia following alleged exposure to dangerous bacteria at an anti-plague research institute in Russia's Siberia region. The case has triggered quarantine measures and medical monitoring of hundreds of people, although Russian authorities have not confirmed that the woman had plague.
The researcher, identified in reports as Darya Shipilova, was reportedly working at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. She was admitted to hospital on September 29 and died two days later after being placed on a ventilator. Reports said she told medical staff that she had accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria.
Nearly 200 people were reportedly placed under quarantine at the Shelekhov hospital where Shipilova was treated. Three hospitals in the region also introduced precautionary measures. Officials said identified contacts were under medical supervision and had tested negative. Vladimir Putin Says Russia Agreed to US Proposals on Ukraine Peace Deal.
Is It Plague?
Authorities have not confirmed that plague caused the death. Buryatia Governor Alexei Tsydenov said the researcher may have died from plague but stressed there was no plague outbreak in the region. Former Russian health official Gennady Onishchenko reportedly said the infection was more likely not plague. The incident has nevertheless raised questions because the researcher was employed at an anti-plague laboratory. Russian officials, including chief state sanitary doctor Anna Popova, have been overseeing the response.
