Syria: Powerful Explosions Hit Army Site Near Aleppo, At Least 4 Injured

A series of powerful explosions struck a Syrian army site near the town of Al-Eis, south of Aleppo, early Monday, injuring at least four people and prompting authorities to close roads leading to the area. The cause of the blasts was not immediately known, according to Syrian state media and officials. The initial explosion was followed by further blasts at the site, which officials said were continuing and preventing emergency teams from safely reaching the area. Faisal Mohammad Ali, head of civil defence operations in Aleppo, said four injured people had been evacuated from the site. Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents to remain indoors temporarily, while hospitals, ambulances and emergency teams were placed on alert. The Internal Security Command in Aleppo said roads leading to the explosion site were closed as a precaution. A resident of Aleppo's Hamdaniyeh neighbourhood told AFP that a huge explosion could be heard from the city and that large flames were visible in the distance. Authorities have not yet established what triggered the explosions. Early reports described the location as a Syrian army site, with some reports identifying it as an ammunition or weapons depot. Officials have not publicly confirmed whether the incident was caused by an accident, a technical failure or another factor.

The incident comes amid a series of recent explosions at military and ammunition facilities across Syria. On September 18, an explosion at a military site in the Ayyash area of western Deir Ezzor killed 11 Defence Ministry personnel, according to Syrian authorities. Syria is continuing to deal with the security and infrastructure challenges left by more than a decade of conflict. The country entered a new political phase following the overthrow of longtime President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
