According to local reports, the family was asleep when the fire rapidly spread through the building, producing heavy smoke and intense flames. Realizing they were trapped, Hitesh Suthar contacted the motel's front desk to request emergency assistance. Motel staff reportedly advised the family to seek shelter inside their bathroom, turn on the water, and remain there until emergency personnel arrived. Emergency services and firefighters arrived shortly after and worked to control the blaze while executing rescue operations at the rear section of the property. However, by the time first responders managed to break through to the bathroom, all three family members had succumbed to smoke inhalation. The fire caused severe damage to the rear wing of the motel, including the staff quarters where the family resided.
The Suthar family originally hailed from Nadiad, located in the Kheda district of Gujarat, India. They had relocated to the United States approximately two years ago. Hitesh Suthar was employed at the Econo Lodge motel, and the family lived on-site in accommodation provided by the management.
