The ruling marks one of the largest corruption cases in recent years in terms of the financial scale involved. The Changzhou Intermediate People's Court in Jiangsu province handed down the sentence on Monday. In addition to the bribery charges, the former official, Yang Youlin, was convicted of embezzlement, offering bribes, misappropriating public funds, abuse of power, and money laundering.
According to the court's statement, Yang utilized his official positions between 1993 and 2023 to secure illicit favors for third parties. In exchange for the assets and property, he allegedly assisted individuals and businesses with project approvals, business operations, land grants, and securing working capital. During the proceedings, Yang reportedly delivered a final statement expressing guilt and remorse for his actions. The court announced that all of Yang's personal property would be seized, and state authorities would actively seek to recover the full financial value of the illicit funds. Public hearings for the trial took place over two days in March and April, drawing more than 30 attendees. Photographs released by the court showed a gray-haired Yang standing in a dark jacket between two uniformed police officers. The prosecution of Yang is part of an ongoing, multi-year anti-corruption campaign initiated by Chinese President Xi Jinping. While state media frames the wide-reaching crackdown as a necessary measure to eliminate internal government graft, critics have argued that the campaign has also been utilized to target and neutralize political opponents. Yang is the latest in a series of high-level officials to face capital punishment under the strict anti-graft drive. In 2021, Lai Xiaomin, a state-owned company party secretary, was executed for bribery and embezzlement. More recently, in 2024, local Inner Mongolian official Li Jianping was also executed following similar corruption convictions.
