Strike Affects Normal Life in Manipur

Imphal, Jul 13 (PTI) The general strike called by the Socialist Students Union of Manipur (SSUM) today affected normal life in the state but there was no report of any violence.

Police said the general strike passed off peacefully as there was no report of any violence from any party of the state as elaborate security arrangements were made to deal with the strike.

The SSUM had called the strike on four issues - the border issue with Myanmar, draft inner line permit (ILP) bill before the ensuing state Assembly session, weightlifter Sanjita's dope test and white paper on transfer and posting of college teachers in the state, SSUM general secretary Bhushan Longjam said.

Inter-state, inter-district bus, taxi, auto-rickshaw services were off the road. All the business establishments including markets, hotels, motels, entertainment houses were closed during the strike, POLICE said.

All educational institutions including universities, colleges were schools were closed, they said.

Attendance at government offices and private establishments were thin, officials said.
