Washington D.C [USA], Jan 2(ANI): The United States has expressed concern over the reported incidents of harassment, intimidation, and violence during the electoral campaign and on election day in Bangladesh.
In a press statement released by the US Department of State here on Monday, Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino said, "We note with concern credible reports of harassment, intimidation, and violence in the pre-election period that made it difficult for many opposition candidates and their supporters to meet, hold rallies, and campaign freely."
"We are also concerned that election-day irregularities prevented some people from voting, which undermined faith in the electoral process," the statement further read.
The US also congratulated the Bangladeshi people and the opposition parties for voting and participating in the general elections.
It also encouraged all parties to refrain from violence and requested the Bangladeshi Election Commission to work constructively with all sides and address claims of the irregularities.
"Bangladesh's impressive record of economic development and respect for democracy and human rights are mutually reinforcing, and we look forward to continue working with the ruling government and opposition towards advancing these interrelated goals," the statement mentioned.
At least 19 people, including a law enforcement official, were killed and around 200 others sustained injuries in poll-related violence in Bangladesh on Sunday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the United Nations (UN) called for restraint in Bangladesh while stressing that "violence and attacks on people and property are not acceptable".(ANI)
