Toyota To Launch 6 New SUVs, MPVs in India by 2028
Toyota Kirloskar Motor plans to launch six new vehicles in India by 2028, focusing on seven-seater SUVs and MPVs. The lineup includes a new Fortuner, an electric MPV, and a three-row Hyryder. This strategy aims to meet family demand while transitioning toward hybrid and electric powertrains to meet stricter emission standards.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor is preparing to significantly expand its Indian portfolio by introducing six new models over the next 3 to 4 years. The upcoming lineup features a heavy emphasis on the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and SUV segments, with four of the six models confirmed to feature three-row seating configurations. This strategic expansion includes the next-generation Fortuner, a 7-seater Hyryder, an updated Innova Hycross, a dedicated electric MPV, the Land Cruiser FJ, and the Corolla Cross.
The move aims to solidify Toyota's position in the large family vehicle market, catering to the growing demand for higher seating capacities. By diversifying its powertrain options to include mild-hybrid, strong-hybrid, and fully electric systems, the manufacturer is aligning with evolving regulatory standards and consumer preferences for more efficient mobility solutions. Toyota Hyryder 7-Seater
Toyota has reportedly commenced testing for a 7-seater version of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which is expected to be the first of the new models to reach showrooms. While it will likely retain the 1.5L mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid powertrains found in the current 5-seater variant, the vehicle will feature an extended length to accommodate the third row. The interior design and feature list are expected to remain consistent with its smaller sibling to maintain production efficiencies.
Toyota Fortuner New-Generation
Codenamed 582D, the third-generation Fortuner is currently under development with a focus on premium technology and revised styling. The SUV is expected to borrow design cues from the new Hilux and will feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and an ADAS suite. Despite the technological overhaul, the model is anticipated to retain the reliable 2.7L petrol and 2.8L diesel engines currently in use.
2027 Toyota Innova Hycross
The Innova Hycross lineup is set for a strategic update in 2027, including the introduction of a lower-specification hybrid variant. This model is specifically intended to attract fleet operators and commercial buyers seeking better fuel efficiency. This update coincides with reports that the long-standing Innova Crysta may be discontinued by 2027 as Toyota moves to comply with stricter CAFÉ 2 emission norms.
Toyota Electric MPV
Expected to debut between 2027 and 2028, Toyota’s first dedicated electric MPV for India is currently codenamed YMC. The vehicle will share its platform and powertrain components with a co-developed Maruti Suzuki model, though it will feature unique Toyota-specific styling. The YMC represents a critical step in the company’s transition toward electrification in the mass-market utility segment. Volkswagen Taigun Facelift Production Commences at Pune Plant.
