Mumbai, July 16: In a tragic incident that took place today morning, a four-storey building collapsed in Dongri area of Mumbai, in which two people have reportedly died and several are feared to be trapped inside the debris. Commenting on this, Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis said, "As per the initial information I have received, around 15 families are feared trapped in the collapse. The building is around 100 yrs old. The entire focus is on rescuing the people trapped. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the site, looking for survivors. Ten ambulances and fire trucks have arrived and are parked some distance away from the building as the lanes are too narrow for them to enter. The BMC has opened a shelter at Imamwada Municipal Secondary Girls' School after the collapse. The demolition of the building was ordered in 2012, said Mumbai Building Repair And Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) Chairman Vinod Ghosalkar. Every year in monsoon there are several cases of building collapse incidents that take place in Mumbai alone, in May 2019, BMC identified 499 buildings as "dangerous". Last year, it was 619.

Ashwini Joshi, Additional Municipal Commissioner, said, “The BMC had informed MHADA about the building. MHADA then issued a notice in 2017. It’s a cess building. A structural audit was carried out in 2017 and the building was declared as C1 (extremely dangerous).”
