The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 was conducted today, May 24, and candidates who appeared for both GS Paper 1 and the qualifying CSAT paper can now access a detailed subject wise breakdown of question distribution, difficulty trends and expected cut off analysis.

Subject Wise Analysis: GS Paper 1

This year's GS Paper 1 saw a notable shift in subject weightage compared to previous years. History emerged as the most heavily weighted subject with 21 questions, a sharp jump from 12 questions in both 2024 and 2025. Science and Technology followed with 18 questions, up from 15 last year, while International Relations made a significant appearance with 11 questions. Economy accounted for 13 questions, Polity for 14, Geography for 11, and Environment for 9 questions. Difficulty Level

While the official difficulty assessment by Vajiram and Ravi faculty is set to be published at 5:00 PM today, early indicators suggest the paper maintained the pattern of moderate to tough complexity seen in recent years. GS Paper 1 in 2025 was rated Moderate to Tough, while CSAT was rated Moderate to Difficult. Candidates can expect a similar or marginally varying assessment for 2026 once expert analysis is available.

CSAT Subject Wise Distribution

The CSAT paper, which is qualifying in nature with a minimum threshold of 33 percent, covers Reasoning Ability, Reading Comprehension, and Numerical Ability across 80 questions. In 2025, Numerical Ability carried the highest share with 34 questions, followed by Reading Comprehension with 29 and Reasoning Ability with 17. Expected Cut Off 2026

The UPSC Prelims Expected Cut Off 2026 will be released based on previous year trends, overall difficulty level, number of vacancies, and candidate performance. Category wise cut off figures for General, OBC, EWS, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates will be available at 5:00 PM. In 2025, the overall exam was rated Moderate, which will serve as a key benchmark for cut off projections this year.
