Mumbai, December 30: The Income Tax Department has issued a final reminder for taxpayers to update their Aadhaar PAN Card Link Status by December 31, 2025. As per the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), PAN cards that are not linked with Aadhaar will become inoperative from January 1, 2026, restricting access to key financial and tax services.

Who Must Update Aadhaar PAN Card Link Status by December 31, 2025?

This deadline applies mainly to individuals who were allotted a PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID (AEID) before October 1, 2024, under CBDT Notification No. 26/2025. Other taxpayers who missed the earlier June 30, 2023 deadline can still update their Aadhaar PAN Card Link Status by paying a INR 1,000 late fee to reactivate their PAN.

What Happens If Aadhaar PAN Card Link Status Is Inactive?

If PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by January 1, 2026, it will become inoperative, leading to:

  • Inability to file Income Tax Returns (ITR)
  • Delay or cancellation of tax refunds
  • Higher TDS and TCS deductions
  • Restrictions on banking and financial transactions
  • KYC failures across institutions

Who Is Exempt From Aadhaar PAN Card Linking?

The following individuals are exempt from checking or updating Aadhaar PAN Card Link Status:

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) without Aadhaar
  • Super senior citizens aged 80 years and above
  • Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu & Kashmir
  • Individuals who are not Indian citizens
