Aadhaar Update Rules: How Many Times You Can Change Name, Address and Date of Birth

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has set clear limits on how many times residents can update key demographic details on their Aadhaar card. While some information like address and contact details can be modified multiple times, core identity fields such as name and date of birth have strict lifetime limits to maintain the accuracy and security of India’s identity database.

New Delhi, March 6: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has set clear limits on how many times residents can update key demographic details on their Aadhaar card. While some information like address and contact details can be modified multiple times, core identity fields such as name and date of birth have strict lifetime limits to maintain the accuracy and security of India’s identity database.

Limits on Name, Date of Birth and Gender Updates

Under UIDAI guidelines, Aadhaar cardholders can update certain primary identity details only a limited number of times. Residents are allowed to change or correct their name twice in their lifetime, which includes minor spelling corrections or name changes after marriage. Aadhaar Card Revamp on the Cards, Photo and QR Code May Replace Printed Details; Here’s Why

The date of birth (DOB) can be corrected only once in the system. Generally, the correction is permitted only if the difference between the existing and the requested date is within plus or minus three years.

Similarly, the gender field can be updated only once, making it important for applicants to carefully verify the information during enrolment or updates. How To Download Aadhaar Card: Know Step-by-Step Guide for E-Aadhaar.

Address and Contact Details Can Be Updated Multiple Times

Unlike name and date of birth, some Aadhaar details are more flexible. Residential address can be updated multiple times, as people often relocate. As long as residents provide valid supporting documents, there is no fixed limit for address updates.

Contact details such as mobile number and email address can also be changed whenever required at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Additionally, residents can update their biometrics, including fingerprints, iris scans and photographs. UIDAI mandates biometric updates for children at ages 5 and 15, while adults are encouraged to update biometrics every 10 years to maintain accuracy.

What to Do if You Exceed the Update Limit

In cases where a resident has already exhausted the permitted number of changes but still needs a correction due to legal or genuine reasons, the standard update process may not work.

Such requests are treated as exception cases. Applicants must contact a regional UIDAI office, submit a request through email or post and visit the office with original documents. The request is then verified and approved manually by authorized officials.

Online Aadhaar Update Services

To simplify services, UIDAI has expanded the myAadhaar portal, allowing residents to update their address online if their mobile number is linked with Aadhaar for OTP verification.

However, updates related to name, date of birth or biometrics usually require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra to ensure the integrity and security of the national identity system. Residents are advised to carefully check their details before submitting any request to avoid exhausting the limited update opportunities.
