Kannada activists began blocking the Attibele inter-state border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at 11 am on Monday, August 10, as part of a one-day protest, ahead of a larger statewide bandh planned for Wednesday, August 13. What's Closed?

The Monday protest involved a complete two-way blockade at the Attibele border. Vehicles travelling from Tamil Nadu into Karnataka were being stopped, while traffic heading from Karnataka towards Tamil Nadu was also being prevented from crossing.

Commuters, freight operators and other interstate travellers using the Attibele route should expect delays or be turned back while the protest is under way. What's Open?

Apart from the Attibele border blockade, no other city-wide disruption or multiple traffic-jam locations have been confirmed. Commuters using other routes within Bengaluru and elsewhere in Karnataka are not expected to face disruption from the day's protest. The wider shutdown has been planned for August 13.

Why Is Karnataka Bandh Planned on August 13?

The statewide bandh is centred on Karnataka's water disputes with neighbouring states and the stalled progress of projects including Mekedatu, Mahadayi and Kalasa Banduri.

Nagaraj announced the August 13 protest during a demonstration in Mysuru on Saturday. He has said more than 2,000 pro-Kannada organisations have already extended support and claimed the number could rise to more than 3,000 by August 13. The proposed shutdown is expected to be broader than Monday's border protest, with Nagaraj appealing to businesses and organisations to participate.

For August 13, Nagaraj has asked hotel owners in Bengaluru and Mysuru to keep their establishments closed as part of the bandh. The call is part of efforts by pro-Kannada groups to increase participation in the statewide shutdown. The extent of participation by hotels and other establishments will become clearer closer to August 13.

 Nagaraj has also warned that Kempegowda International Airport could be shut to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Joseph if he visits Karnataka without extending support for the Mekedatu reservoir project. "If not, we will close the airport and not allow him to land in Karnataka," Nagaraj said. There has been no indication that the airport is otherwise scheduled to close as part of Monday's Attibele protest.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has appealed to Nagaraj to withdraw the August 13 bandh. Nagaraj has rejected the appeal, leaving the statewide shutdown on track. For now, the immediate disruption is concentrated at the Attibele border, while commuters across the rest of Bengaluru and Karnataka are not facing a confirmed statewide shutdown on Monday.

The key date for the broader protest remains August 13, when the impact on transport, businesses and public services will depend on the level of participation.
