8th Pay Commission: Central Govt Employees May See DA Rise to 66-67% From January 2027
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to submit its recommendations by May 2027, but Central government employees and pensioners could see a DA and DR increase earlier. Based on available AICPI-IW data and the 7th Pay Commission formula, DA may reach 66-67% from January 2027. The projection is not an official government announcement.
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to submit its recommendations to the Central Government by May 2027. However, central government employees and pensioners could see another increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) before the pay panel submits its final report.
The latest available All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data, when applied to the existing 7th Pay Commission formula, indicates that DA could potentially reach around 66-67% of basic pay from January 1, 2027, Asianet reported. However, this remains an estimate and has not been officially announced by the Central Government. 8th Pay Commission Update: CSS Forum Pushes for Higher CGEIS Insurance Benefits.
AICPI-IW Data Points To Possible DA Increase
DA is linked to changes in the AICPI-IW. For the January 2027 revision, the government will consider the actual index data from January to December 2026.
The AICPI-IW stood at 148.6 in January 2026 and increased to 153.2 in July 2026. If the index remains around 153.2 between August and December, the 12-month average would be approximately 151.5. 8th Pay Commission: Employee Unions Demand Higher Bonus Ceilings Ahead of Dussehra Festival.

| February 2026 | 148.5 |
| March 2026 | 149.1 |
| April 2026 | 149.9 |
| May 2026 | 150.8 |
| June 2026 | 151.9 |
| July 2026 | 153.2 |
| August–December* | 153.2 |

What The 7th Pay Commission Formula Shows
The 7th Pay Commission uses the following formula for calculating DA:
DA = [{(Average of last 12 months' AICPI-IW × 2.88) − 261.41} / 261.41] × 100 − Existing DA (%)
Based on the projected average index of 151.5, the calculation produces a DA figure of about 66.91%.
If the current DA rate is assumed to be 63%, this would represent an increase of about 3.91 percentage points. Depending on the final index numbers and the government's rounding-off method, the DA rate could potentially be set at 66% or 67%.
66-67% DA Is Only A Projection
The 66-67% figure should not be treated as a confirmed DA rate.
The Central Government has not officially announced the DA rate for January 2027. It has also not confirmed the January 2026 DA rate used in this calculation.
The final DA rate will depend on the actual AICPI-IW numbers released for the full January-December 2026 period and the government's subsequent decision.
What It Means For Central Government Employees
DA directly affects the salaries of eligible Central government employees. When the allowance is increased, the monthly salary of employees also rises.
For pensioners, a corresponding increase in Dearness Relief can affect their monthly pension.
If the AICPI-IW trend remains stable or continues to rise through the end of 2026, the January 2027 DA revision could therefore be higher than the current rate.
How The 8th Pay Commission Fits In
The possible DA increase is separate from the future recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission.
The pay commission is expected to review salaries, allowances and other benefits. Its recommendations could eventually result in a broader restructuring of the pay system.
Regular DA revisions, however, continue under the existing mechanism and should not be confused with the salary revisions that may eventually follow the 8th Pay Commission's recommendations.
When Will The DA Rate Become Clear?
The January 2027 DA calculation will become clearer after all relevant AICPI-IW statistics for 2026 are released.
Until then, the projected 66-67% rate remains an estimate based on the available data and assumed index levels. Employees and pensioners should therefore wait for the complete AICPI-IW data and the Central Government's official announcement before treating the figure as final.
