Ahmedabad: Teacher Slaps Student at School, Ruptures Eardrum; Suspended

Police have launched an investigation after the student's father filed a complaint over the incident.
The incident occurred at Chanakya School in Ahmedabad's Nikol area during a physical training (PT) session. According to school authorities, the student, who studies in the Gujarati-medium section of Class 10, was sitting and talking with friends on the school grounds when the alleged assault took place. Teacher Allegedly Slapped Student During PT Session
According to the school management, an English-medium teacher identified as Laxman approached the group during the PT period and allegedly slapped the student despite not being connected to his class. The impact of the alleged slap left the student's left ear swollen and bleeding, and he reportedly experienced difficulty hearing.
School authorities informed the student's father, who immediately came to the campus. "When I reached the school, my son said he could not hear properly," the father alleged. The father then took his son to a doctor, where medical examinations reportedly revealed that the boy's left eardrum had ruptured. Surgery May Be Required
Doctors have advised that if the swelling does not subside within the next week, the student may need surgery. According to the school, the accused teacher admitted his mistake before both the school trust and the student's family.
However, the student's father said he would not forgive the teacher because of the seriousness of the injury. "If my son suffers permanent hearing problems or requires surgery, the responsibility will lie with the school trust and the teacher," he said, adding that he has decided to pursue legal action.
Following the complaint, Krishnanagar Police registered a non-cognisable (NC) case and detained the teacher for questioning. The investigation is ongoing. A police inspector at Krishnanagar Police Station said authorities had received information that the student was unable to hear properly after the alleged assault. "We have registered an NC complaint and begun an inquiry into the matter," the officer said.
Teacher Suspended Pending Inquiry
Ahmedabad District Education Officer (DEO) Rohit Chaudhary said an inquiry was initiated immediately after the matter came to light.
"Based on the information received so far, the teacher slapped the student while children were on the playground. Orders have been issued for the teacher's immediate suspension," Chaudhary said.
The school has also suspended the teacher pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident while the student's medical condition remains under observation.
