A Class 8 student allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday night at her home in Marasuru Madivala village in Anekal taluk on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Karnataka. Her family has alleged that she was emotionally distressed after being repeatedly "tortured" and "harassed" by teachers at her school. Police are investigating the case, including the contents of a handwritten note reportedly left behind by the student.
The girl, identified as Madhushree, was a student of Marasuru Government Higher Primary School. According to police, the incident came to light on Thursday morning when family members found her dead in her room.
Police said Madhushree left behind a handwritten note in which she alleged that a teacher punished her for not completing her homework and imposed a fine of INR 20. According to the note, the punishment, fine and alleged threat of a Transfer Certificate deeply affected the student and contributed to her decision to take the extreme step. Police said they are verifying the authenticity and contents of the handwritten note as part of the ongoing investigation.
Madhushree's family has alleged that she had been subjected to repeated verbal abuse and humiliation by the school's headmistress, identified as Sujata, and some members of the teaching staff. Amaira Meena Case: CCTV Video Reveals Bullying Complaints, Family Slams Neerja Modi School Chargesheet.
Her mother, Girija, also accused school staff of harassing her daughter.
"It seems like the teachers have been torturing her. I don't know their names. She missed school for one day. She didn't tell anyone what she went through at school. She could have told her sister, but I wasn't aware of it," Madhushree's mother claimed.
Earlier, the mother had also said there was no harassment at home and that she only came to know that her daughter had allegedly been troubled by teachers at school.
"I don't know exactly what happened. If someone had harassed her at home, she would have told me. There was no harassment at home. I only heard that some teachers at school had troubled her. I don't know which teacher or teachers," she said.
A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Suryanagar Police Station. Police said they are investigating all aspects of the case, including the family's allegations against the school staff, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe.
