Bihar Hospital Viral Video: Mobile Torch Used To Treat Patients After Power Failure in Sasaram, Probe Launched
Patients at Bihar’s Sasaram Sadar Hospital were reportedly treated under mobile phone flashlight after a sudden power outage hit the emergency ward. Viral videos prompted questions over backup power systems at the hospital. Rohtas District Magistrate Deepak Kumar Mishra said a preliminary inquiry found an MCB malfunction caused the outage for around two minutes and ordered a detailed probe.
Patients at Sadar Hospital in Bihar’s Rohtas district were reportedly treated under the flashlight of mobile phones after a sudden power outage disrupted services in the emergency ward. A video circulating on social media show doctors and healthcare workers attending to patients in dim conditions, prompting questions about the reliability of the hospital’s emergency power arrangements.
The incident was reported at the Model Hospital attached to Sadar Hospital in Sasaram. According to India Today, doctors and medical staff were attending to emergency patients when the electricity supply was interrupted. Medical personnel reportedly continued treating patients using mobile phone flashlights until power was restored. Doctors Treat Emergency Patients Under Mobile Phone Flashlight
Visuals circulating online show healthcare workers examining and attending to patients in low light after the electricity supply was disrupted.
The videos have drawn criticism because the hospital is understood to have dedicated arrangements intended to maintain electricity during power failures, including a separate transformer, generators and other backup infrastructure. The incident has therefore raised questions over whether the backup systems operated as intended when the emergency ward lost power. The specific viral footage has not been independently verified.
Rohtas Magistrate Clarifies The Situation
Reacting to the viral videos, Rohtas District Magistrate Deepak Kumar Mishra said a preliminary inquiry suggested that the outage was caused by a malfunction in the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB), resulting in a brief interruption in electricity.
"The matter came to our notice after videos of treatment under mobile torchlight surfaced on social media. A preliminary investigation found that the MCB had tripped, leading to a power outage of approximately two minutes," Mishra said.
The District Magistrate added that a team has been constituted to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident. He said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Hospital’s Backup Power Under Scrutiny
The reported outage has focused attention on the hospital’s emergency power infrastructure.
Sadar Hospital, Sasaram, is the government-listed district hospital for Rohtas and is located on Rauza Road in Sasaram. The district administration lists separate emergency contact details for the facility.
The hospital reportedly has a separate transformer as well as generators and other backup arrangements intended to prevent interruptions to critical services.
Officials will now have to establish whether those systems functioned normally during the incident and why mobile phone flashlights were required while patients were being treated.
Emergency Care And Power Supply
Reliable electricity is particularly important in emergency wards, where doctors and medical staff may need to examine patients, administer treatment and operate medical equipment without interruption. Even a short outage can create difficulties if backup systems do not activate immediately.
Officials have said the preliminary assessment points to an MCB malfunction and a power interruption lasting approximately two minutes. The detailed inquiry is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any maintenance or operational lapse contributed to the incident.
Earlier Power-Related Incidents
The latest episode also comes against the backdrop of earlier reports involving power disruptions at Sasaram Sadar Hospital. In June 2025, local reporting described patients being treated under mobile phone light during a power outage at the hospital’s trauma centre. That report said the outage lasted significantly longer and also raised questions about the use of the hospital’s generator.
A separate report from December 2021 similarly described treatment under mobile-phone flashlight at the hospital after a power failure and said the generator could not be started promptly. Those were separate incidents and should not be treated as evidence that the same failure occurred in the latest case.
Detailed Inquiry To Determine Lapses
While officials have described the latest outage as brief, the use of mobile phone flashlights during emergency treatment has renewed concerns about preparedness for power interruptions.
The inquiry ordered by the district administration is expected to examine the MCB malfunction, the response of the backup systems and whether hospital procedures were followed during the outage.
For now, officials have reported no information in the supplied account indicating that patients suffered harm because of the brief power interruption. The findings of the detailed inquiry will determine whether any administrative or technical action is required.
