T Krishnakumar On Bombay Creamery

T Krishnakumar, Director at Reliance Consumer Products, said the brand was built around the idea that dairy products should not involve shortcuts. "We built Bombay Creamery around one simple idea that dairy shouldn't need shortcuts. RCPL is not just entering the ice cream category - we're committing to it," Krishnakumar said.

He said the products are made with real dairy cream and are aimed at offering what the company described as genuine ice cream at an affordable price. In the company's fuller statement, Krishnakumar said, “We built Bombay Creamery around one simple idea that dairy shouldn't need shortcuts. RCPL is not just entering the ice cream category — we're committing to it. Made with real dairy cream, Bombay Creamery guarantees the promise of genuine taste of a real ice cream every single time, at a price every Indian family can afford.”

Western India Launch First

Bombay Creamery ice creams will initially be available in Western India. Reliance said the brand will soon be rolled out across the country. The company is relying on RCPL's existing distribution infrastructure and retail scale to support the launch and subsequent expansion. The brand's entry places Reliance in competition with established ice cream companies including Amul, Mother Dairy, Kwality Wall's, Vadilal and Arun.

Reliance Expands Its FMCG Push

The ice cream launch follows Reliance's broader expansion across consumer categories. Its Campa beverage business has also been pursuing an aggressive pricing and distribution strategy in India's soft-drink market.

Based on industry estimates cited in the supplied material, Coca-Cola has a 40-42% share of India's carbonated beverages market, followed by PepsiCo with 28-30%. Campa has been estimated at 7-8% after its relaunch in March 2023.

Apart from competitive pricing, higher trade margins offered to distributors have played a key role in accelerating the brand's expansion across modern trade, general trade and Reliance Retail stores with brands like Campa Cola, Campa Orange, Campa Lemon.

The Bombay Creamery launch indicates that Reliance is applying its broader distribution and pricing strategy to another high-volume consumer category, although the company's performance in ice cream will depend on how quickly it can build distribution and consumer demand against established competitors.
