New Delhi, October 26: It is an eventful day on Friday for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). While the Supreme Court is set to take up CBI top boss Alok Verma's plea against him being sent on leave, the Opposition led by the Congress will protest outside the CBI Headquarters against the temporary removal of Verma. CBI Director Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana were sent on leave in a late night 2 am move on Tuesday amid the mess in the investigating agency. Supreme Court to Hear CBI Chief Alok Verma's Plea Challenging His 'Removal'.

The Supreme Court will hear the pleas filed by Verma and NGO Common Cause challenging his removal as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. The bench which would be adjudicating on the petitions is headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

On Thursday, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, wrote a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the CVC's decision to send CBI director Alok Verma on a forced leave. Kharge, who is part of the selection panel which appoints the CBI chief, expressed his disapproval on Verma being divested of his powers. Calling the move illegal, Kharge said the PM should had convened a selection committee meeting to decide on the case.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi yesterday accused the government of "sacking Verma at 2 am in the night as he was about to begin a probe into the Rafale deal". Had the probe been initiated, "the PM would had been finished", he added.

The CBI, meanwhile, issued a clarification claiming that neither Verma nor Asthana have been removed of their charges. Both the top officials have been sent on a forced leave till the CVC adjudicates on the complaints registered against them.
