The Centre has officially revised the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), leading to an increase in minimum wage rates for various categories of workers nationwide, effective October 1. The adjustment is designed to shield workers from inflation by updating the component tied to consumer price movements.

Understanding the VDA Revision and Scope

The Variable Dearness Allowance serves as the inflation-linked component of minimum wages and is revised biannually by the central government based on fluctuations in the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW), reports Livemint. 8th Pay Commission Delay Could Cost Level 7 Employees up to INR 3.32 Lakh.

The latest revision, issued under the Code on Wages, applies to central-sphere workers engaged in scheduled employments such as construction and maintenance, sweeping and cleaning, loading and unloading, watch and ward duties, and agriculture. Officials note that these rates function as central benchmarks, meaning state-specific employments may continue to be governed independently by respective state notifications.

For construction and maintenance sectors, daily earnings now vary according to skill classification and geographical area categorisation (Areas A, B, and C).
