The Adyar police in Chennai registered a criminal case against Kayalvizhi Alagiri on Saturday after she allegedly assaulted and threatened the branch manager of a State Bank of India (SBI) NRI branch in the city following a dispute over a malfunctioning elevator.
Chennai Police have registered a case against Kayalvizhi Alagiri, daughter of former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri and granddaughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, for allegedly assaulting the manager of a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Chennai's Adyar. The case was filed after a complaint accused her of slapping the branch manager during an argument over a malfunctioning elevator in a commercial building she owns.
According to police, the incident occurred at the SBI NRI branch operating from the building owned by Kayalvizhi Alagiri. CCTV footage of the altercation has surfaced online and is being examined as part of the investigation. Police said the branch manager had contacted the building owner regarding repeated complaints about a non-functional lift after earlier requests through her representatives allegedly went unanswered. Investigators said Kayalvizhi later visited the bank to discuss the issue, where the conversation reportedly escalated into a heated argument. Kayalvizhi Alagiri Booked for Allegedly Slapping SBI Branch Manager
The complaint alleges that during the confrontation, she slapped the branch manager and also issued threats. Bank officials subsequently approached the police seeking legal action.
Based on the complaint, Adyar police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials said CCTV footage and statements from those present at the branch will form part of the investigation. Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the case. Authorities said further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation and the evidence collected.
As of Saturday, neither Kayalvizhi Alagiri nor her representatives had issued a public statement responding to the allegations. The State Bank of India has also not released an official statement on the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have urged the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry is completed.
