'Cyclone Arnab' Tracker: Deep Depression Moves Inland Over North Andhra Pradesh After Landfall, Says IMD

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast close to southwest of Kalingapatnam between 11 PM on September 23 and 1 AM on September 24, the India Meteorological Department said. The system made landfall as a deep depression with maximum sustained winds of 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph.

At 5:30 AM today, September 24, it lay centred over north coastal Andhra Pradesh near latitude 18.3°N and longitude 83.7°E, about 50 km west of Kalingapatnam, 80 km north-northeast of Visakhapatnam and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. Deep Depression's Track and Intensity Forecast

The system is expected to continue northwestwards while maintaining deep depression intensity for the next 12 hours. It is then likely to move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually over the following 24 hours. Officials had earlier forecast that the deep depression would not intensify into a cyclonic storm before landfall. The next name on the regional roster for a cyclonic storm in the North Indian Ocean is cyclone "Arnab", contributed by Bangladesh and meaning  "ocean" in Bengali. The system remained below the intensity threshold required for naming.

Rainfall and Wind Impacts

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has already occurred in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha under the system’s influence. Districts including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitharama Raju and Anakapalli in Andhra Pradesh were under red alert for heavy rain and winds of 50-60 kmph. Squally winds of 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph, were expected along and off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts through September 24. Fishermen were advised to stay off the sea until September 25. Background

The weather system developed as a depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and intensified into a deep depression on September 22. It tracked west-northwestwards towards the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur. Rainfall associated with the system has also affected interior districts and is expected to continue in reduced intensity as the system moves inland and weakens. State disaster management agencies continue to monitor conditions and have urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious of strong winds, possible waterlogging and flash floods in the coming 48 hours.
