Over 5.5 million central government employees and pensioners are awaiting an official announcement on the July 2026 Dearness Allowance hike during the Union Cabinet meeting. The upcoming revision, expected to be 3 per cent or 4 per cent, will apply retrospectively from July 1, 2026, building upon the current 60 per cent DA rate approved earlier this year.
Central government employees and pensioners are awaiting the official announcement of the July 2026 dearness allowance (DA) hike, with beneficiaries hoping for an update during the Union Cabinet meeting. More than 55 million central government employees and pensioners have been waiting for the dearness allowance revision ahead of the festive season. The upcoming decision follows earlier delays, as previous cabinet meetings did not include the announcement.

According to an Economic Times report, “In the festive season, when Diwali is around, more than 55 lakh central government employees have been waiting for a dearness allowance (DA) hike announcement. As the government is set to hold its weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday (October 28, 2026), employees' long wait can be over.”
Current DA Rates and Calculation Framework
Dearness allowance serves as a cost-of-living adjustment paid to central government employees as a percentage of basic pay to offset inflation. According to a Ministry of Finance release dated April 18, 2026, the Union Cabinet previously approved a 2 per cent increase in DA, effective from January 1, 2026, which raised the rate from 58 per cent to 60 per cent of basic pay. 8th Pay Commission: What Are Basic Pay, Grade Pay and Pay Levels? Under the current 60 per cent rate, an employee drawing a basic salary of INR 18,000 receives INR 10,800 monthly as DA. Illustrative projections indicate that a 3% hike would increase the rate to 63 per cent (adding INR 540 per month), while a 4 per cent hike would raise it to 64 per cent (adding INR 720 per month). The final revision will be applied retrospectively from July 1, 2026, subject to formal government notification and approved disbursement terms.
