Instagram Reel Leads to Breakthrough

According to police, Nitisha Vats, currently residing at Sikka Kimaya Greens in Dehradun's IT Park area, had reported that her jewellery went missing about a year ago when she was living at Doon Republic Apartments in Bhagirathi Puram, Jakhan.

Dehradun Woman Solves INR 10 Lakh Jewellery Theft

At the time of the theft, Vats suspected her domestic help, Vimala Devi. However, Vimala Devi denied any involvement and even offered to accompany her to the police station to lodge a complaint. With no evidence and no trace of the jewellery despite searching the house, the matter remained unresolved.

Social Media Video Cracks the Case

The case took a dramatic turn on June 29 when one of Vats' acquaintances noticed Vimala Devi wearing jewellery resembling the missing ornaments in an Instagram reel and WhatsApp status. Ghaziabad: Viral Video Shows Man Running With His Body on Fire Following Transformer Blast in Uttar Pradesh.

After reviewing the videos and photographs, Vats identified the jewellery as her own and approached the police with the new evidence.

Based on her complaint, Rajpur Police registered a case on July 1 and launched an investigation.

Domestic Help Arrested, Jewellery Recovered

Police arrested Vimala Devi on Friday from Johri Road in Dehradun. During the operation, officers recovered the stolen jewellery, including a diamond necklace, gold locket, two gold rings, a gold pendant and a mobile phone. The recovered valuables are estimated to be worth around INR 10 lakh.

Accused Confesses During Questioning

During interrogation, Vimala Devi, a native of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh who currently lives in Jakhan, allegedly confessed to the theft.

Police said she had worked as a domestic help at Nitisha Vats' residence and was aware that expensive jewellery was kept inside a locker. She allegedly stole the valuables when she found an opportunity about a year ago.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
