Delhi Police has denied permission for the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, citing public safety and law-and-order concerns. The police have also warned that unauthorised gatherings could invite legal action, as the party continues its campaign seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Delhi Police Cites Public Safety, Warns of Legal Action
Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrishti Pandey said prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remain in force. She clarified that protests are not permitted at Jantar Mantar or any other location while the restrictions are in effect. The police have urged people to stay away from the proposed gathering, warning that any unauthorised assembly could be treated as illegal and lead to legal action. CJP Had Notified Police About October 10 Protest
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das had submitted a formal letter at the Parliament Street police station, informing the authorities about the planned demonstration. The party had sought police cooperation to maintain law and order and manage traffic during the protest. Das said the party had formally notified the police to avoid any dispute over whether the authorities had been informed in advance. However, the police subsequently denied permission for the demonstration.
Why Is CJP Demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation?
The proposed protest is part of CJP’s campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party and other groups have raised concerns over the deletion of voters’ names during the revision exercise. CJP has sought Kumar’s resignation, making the October 10 demonstration part of its wider campaign over electoral-roll revision and election-related concerns.
Security Tightened Across Delhi Ahead of Protest
The denial of permission comes amid heightened security arrangements in the national capital. More than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel were reported to have been deployed ahead of the proposed demonstration, with authorities seeking to prevent violence and disruption to traffic. The police are also investigating violence reported during CJP’s July 20 march towards Parliament. The probe covers allegations of assaults on police personnel, vandalism and damage to public property. The October 10 protest is scheduled to take place against this backdrop of restrictions and heightened security. Delhi Police has reiterated that gatherings held in violation of the prohibitory orders could lead to legal action.
