A 23-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly murdered by her husband at their Faridabad home on Thursday, June 25, after what police said was a pattern of confinement in which she was routinely locked inside the house for hours while he was at work. The accused, Amit Gupta (26), is absconding and a murder case has been registered.

Police said the victim, Neha Kumari, who was six months pregnant, was allegedly subjected to prolonged confinement at their residence in Panchsheel Colony Part II, where her husband reportedly locked her inside for up to 10 hours daily due to suspicion of infidelity. Investigators said the case came to light after Gupta allegedly informed a relative that he had killed her.

According to police, Amit Gupta, a graphic designer working in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi, would leave home between 8:30 am and 9 am and return around 7 pm. Investigators said he allegedly began locking the main door from outside while leaving home, preventing Neha from going out or meeting anyone. Officials said this practice continued for an extended period before the alleged murder.

“Family members disclosed that he had recently started locking the main door from outside while leaving to ensure that neither his wife could venture out nor anyone could come in to meet her due to his suspicion. She had shared this development with her family members but never resisted,” the officer said, requesting anonymity.

“Neighbours had also corroborated that Neha, who was six months pregnant, used to remain locked inside their newly built house. He didn’t even allow his wife to visit the market alone,” the officer added.

Police said Gupta allegedly forced Neha’s head into a bucket of water before fleeing the scene. Investigators said he had stopped going to work in recent days and was staying at home more frequently before the incident. According to officials, Gupta later informed his uncle that he had killed his wife. The relative reached the house, found Neha dead and alerted the family.

Dilip Kumar, the victim’s brother-in-law, said the couple had been facing disputes since their wedding on April 30, 2025. “Gupta’s behaviour had improved, but once again he had started locking his wife at home... He also pressured her to ask her father for gifting him an air conditioner and other household items,” he said.

Kumar said Neha last spoke to her sister around 10:50 am on Thursday, during which she discussed financial difficulties. He added that repeated calls after that went unanswered.

Faridabad police said a case has been registered under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Vijay Prasad.

Yashpal Yadav, public relations officer of Faridabad police, said Neha’s father had purchased the land but registered it in Gupta’s name under pressure and also built the house for the couple.

A medical board conducted the post-mortem on Saturday, and the detailed report is awaited. Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused, who remains absconding.
