Goa: Son Arrested, Wife Booked After Viral Video Shows Assault on Elderly Father
Colva police arrested Isidoreo Souza and booked his wife, Irene Gonsalves, after a viral social media video allegedly showed them assaulting Isidoreo's 83-year-old father, Loyala Souza, at their Betalbatim home. The case includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, with police continuing their investigation.
Colva police arrested Isidoreo Souza of Betalbatim on Friday evening, July 10, under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, for allegedly brutally assaulting his 83-year-old father.
Isidoreo's wife, Irene Gonsalves, has also been booked for the same offence but was not arrested at the time of registration of the case in view of Supreme Court guidelines, police said. The case was registered after a complaint was filed by Crisostomo Mariano Soares of Cuncolim, who told police he had come across a video circulating on social media that allegedly showed an elderly man being assaulted inside a house. Complaint Based on Viral Video
According to the complaint filed by Soares, the video shows a woman and a man physically assaulting 83-year-old Loyala Souza. Irene is seen slapping Loyala and later assaulting him with slippers. Subsequently, Isidoreo also assaulted the senior citizen with slaps and fist blows in the video clip.
Soares said that both Isidoreo and Irene are heard abusing, threatening and humiliating the elderly man in the clip. He further alleged that Loyala appeared to have been prevented from moving freely or leaving the premises. Police Register Multiple Charges
According to the complaint, the video prima facie discloses not only physical assault but also wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation.
Based on the complaint, Colva police registered an offence against Isidoreo and Irene, alleging that Loyala was repeatedly assaulted with slippers and slapped on his head, face, neck, hands and other parts of his body with common intention, thereby causing bodily injuries.
The couple has also been booked for allegedly wrongfully restraining the victim, abusing him with filthy language and threatening him with dire consequences.
Social welfare director Dipak Desai said he sent the viral video to the DGP requesting investigation as per law and appropriate action based on the facts and evidence available. The investigation into the case is underway.
