The victim was identified as Avyaan Surya, son of Kendriya Vidyalaya Vice Principal Siwan Yadav. According to residents, the nearly 15-foot-deep pit had been dug by the Greater Noida Authority for boring work but was left uncovered and filled with rainwater. Avyaan was reportedly playing with other children when he accidentally fell into the open pit. Residents rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident sparked anger among residents, who accused the Greater Noida Authority of failing to implement safety measures despite previous tragedies. They pointed to the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned after his car plunged into a waterlogged pit near a construction site in Noida on the intervening night of January 16 and 17. Residents claimed the authority had then assured that all such hazardous pits would be secured. SDM Sadar Ashutosh Gupta, who inspected the spot, said preliminary findings indicated there was no barricading around the pit. He added that legal action would be taken against the contractor responsible if negligence is established.
