Police in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district have arrested seven people, including a woman’s husband, after uncovering an alleged human trafficking and s*xual assault network during an investigation into a missing person complaint. Authorities said the accused husband allegedly conspired with friends to “sell” his wife for INR 50,000 before filing a police complaint claiming she had disappeared.
The case emerged from Palanpur West Police Station, where Nikesh Patel, a resident of Ganeshpura village, approached officers on May 19 to report that his wife was missing. Investigators later alleged that the complaint was part of an attempt to mislead police and divert suspicion. According to police, inconsistencies in Patel’s statements raised suspicion during the investigation supervised by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dr. Jignesh Gamit. Under questioning, Patel allegedly confessed to conspiring with several associates to traffic his wife because he “did not like her,” police said.
Investigators alleged that Patel, along with Sanjay Thakor, Ashok Thakor and Sachin Darbar, planned the transaction in advance and handed the woman over to other accused individuals for INR 50,000. Police said the woman was allegedly lured away under the pretext of travelling before being taken to a secluded location and confined against her will. Woman Rescued During Police Operation
Following the confession, Palanpur West Police launched a rescue operation and located the woman at a separate location. Authorities said she was brought to safety and later provided a statement detailing her alleged ordeal.
According to police, the woman alleged that she was subjected to repeated s*xual assault and gang rape during captivity. She also claimed the accused forcibly took her gold jewellery and later sold it.
Based on the victim’s statement, police registered a case under sections related to human trafficking, gang rape, robbery and criminal conspiracy. A total of seven accused individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
Police said further investigation is ongoing to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged trafficking network.
Human trafficking remains a serious criminal issue across several parts of India, with law enforcement agencies frequently investigating cases involving forced confinement, exploitation and s*xual violence. Officials in Gujarat said the swift rescue operation and arrests were made possible after investigators identified contradictions in the original missing person complaint.
