How a Google Alert Led to Kanpur Man’s Arrest Over S*xually Explicit Videos of Minor Girls

A man has been arrested in Kanpur's Chaman Ganj area after Google alerted police to suspected child s*xual abuse material (CSAM) stored on his Google Drive account. Police say the accused secretly recorded s*xually explicit videos of his minor cousins and other girls from his neighbourhood, then uploaded and stored the files in the cloud.

The accused was arrested on Friday, and police recovered around 15 objectionable videos involving minor girls from his phone and cloud storage.

Google Alert Triggered Investigation

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anjali Vishwakarma said the Cyber Crime Police Station received information on July 6 through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) regarding a serious offence involving women and children. Accused Traced Through Digital Evidence

Police said Google provided several technical details during the investigation, including the accused's email account, mobile phone IMEI number, IP address, and other digital identifiers. According to police, the accused is a high school graduate who works in the baby diaper business. Investigators found that he had deleted the videos from his mobile phone but continued to store them on Google Drive, where the platform's automated safety systems flagged the content.

During questioning, the accused allegedly admitted to secretly recording the videos over the past three months.

Videos Allegedly Included Minor Family Members

Police alleged that the accused recorded s*xually explicit videos of his 14-year-old and 8-year-old cousins, other minor girls in his extended family, and girls from the neighbourhood. Some of the videos were allegedly recorded without the victims' knowledge, including while they were in private spaces.

Investigators also said the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) had generated four cyber tipline reports linked to the accused's account. During the course of the investigation, police found information connected to three additional complaints.

Police Investigating Possible Online Distribution

Police are now examining whether the recovered videos were solely stored in cloud storage or were also uploaded or distributed through other websites or platforms. Digital forensic analysis of the accused's devices and online accounts is currently underway.

How Google Detects Such Content

Police explained that while many users store personal files on Google Drive, the platform also uses automated safety systems to identify content that violates its policies. When uploaded files are flagged as suspected CSAM or other prohibited material, Google's systems can suspend the account and, in accordance with legal requirements, share relevant information with law enforcement, including account details, email address, IP address, and device identifiers.

Under Google's policies and applicable law, users are prohibited from storing or sharing CSAM, terrorist or violent extremist content, copyright-infringing material, or other illegal content.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue examining the accused's digital activity to determine the full extent of the alleged offences.
