A 20-year-old second-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead in his hostel room on Tuesday night, July 28, with police launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said preliminary findings suggest the death was a suspected suicide, while no foul play has been suspected so far.
The deceased has been identified as Sohil Rajkumar Sangwan, a second-year Material Science student from Pilani, Rajasthan, who was residing in a hostel on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai. Police said they received information about the incident on the intervening night of July 28 and 29, following which officers reached the hostel. According to officials, preliminary findings indicate the death was a suspected suicide. Police have not reported any evidence of foul play at this stage. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered at Powai Police Station under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

Police are continuing to analyse his mobile phone and other electronic devices to determine whether any additional factors may have contributed to the incident.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and further findings will depend on the examination of digital evidence and other material collected during the inquiry. Police have reiterated that no foul play is suspected at present.
