Jabalpur Engineering College Student Dies by Suicide at Hostel, Backlogs Reportedly Caused Stress

A fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student of Jabalpur Engineering College (JEC) allegedly died by suicide at a private hostel in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. The student, identified as Om Pandey, was in the seventh semester of his course and was staying at a hostel in the Ranjhi area of the city. Police said Pandey was alone in the room when the incident occurred. His two roommates had gone out and found the room locked when they returned. After opening the room, they found him and alerted others, following which police were informed. The body was sent for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation. Police are also recording statements from the student's friends, family members and relatives to establish the circumstances leading to his death. Preliminary inquiries have indicated that Pandey had faced backlogs in some subjects after falling ill earlier.
