According to the police investigation, the fatal incident occurred on July 4 when Neeraj Sharma was returning home from a physiotherapy session with her teenage son. The case initially raised suspicions when Neeraj's brother noted unusual behavior from Ayushi and requested a thorough police investigation. A turning point came when investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the scene. The video showed Neeraj walking safely on the extreme edge of an empty road, leaving no logical reason for a collision. It also revealed a parked Scorpio waiting in the distance, alongside two men stationed nearby on motorcycles who fled immediately after the impact without offering help.
The roots of the conspiracy trace back to the death of Ayushi's father, Vijay Sharma, a lower court employee who passed away last year. Following his death, the government offered a compassionate service appointment. While Ayushi wanted the job, Neeraj ultimately took it herself on the advice of her brother, who pointed out that Neeraj needed financial stability to care for her 16-year-old mentally challenged son.
Police allege that this decision deeply embittered Ayushi, prompting her to move into the family's old house and enroll in an LLB course. During this time, she allegedly partnered with her cousin, Balram, and her paternal uncle, Mohan Sharma, to eliminate her mother. Investigators revealed that this was not the first attempt on Neeraj's life. A month prior, the co-conspirators allegedly hired a driver to run her over with a Thar SUV, but she escaped unhurt. Following that incident, a paranoid Neeraj installed mesh screens and four CCTV cameras around her home. When she restricted her movements, Ayushi reportedly resorted to superstition-related intimidation, scattering lemons and red substances outside the house to scare her mother into leaving.
Following the successful second attempt using the rented Scorpio, police tracked down the vehicle and subsequently arrested the contract killers and Ayushi’s uncle. Ayushi was brought in from her native village of Rupwas for questioning. Officials state that during interrogation, she confessed to her role in the conspiracy and has shown no remorse.
