On September 19, two Class 10 students - a girl and a boy - were returning on a two-wheeler from Marwa Hill in Jamui after coaching classes when a group of men stopped them on a deserted stretch of road. The group allegedly abused, harassed and molested the minors. One of the men was seen in a video grabbing and lifting the girl. Clips of the incident circulated on social media, prompting police to register a case under the POCSO Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police initially detained three minors. On September 22, the main accused, Nandan Yadav (also referred to as Nandan Kumar Yadav), was shot in the leg during an encounter while police searched for him near Pratappur village. An accomplice, Hare Ram Yadav, was also injured while trying to flee and was arrested. Police said Nandan opened fire on officers, who responded in self-defence. Both men were hospitalised under police watch. Several others, including the person who filmed and shared the video, have been taken into custody. Authorities have linked some of the accused to illegal sand mining and liquor trade and warned against further circulation of the video, registering cases against social media accounts that shared it.

I repeatedly say that our administration is known for good governance… That’s why I repeatedly ask criminals—why do you challenge my police? If you challenge, you will get a response within 24 hours, there is no other way…” He added that criminals have no caste and that the police would respond to any challenge. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) criticised the chief minister’s statement. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), RJD said, "Listen to the well-wisher Maharaja's advice: If you dream of becoming CM, HM, or PM from BJP in the future, go ahead and keep pulling off scandals, but don't leave any evidence behind!" RJD leader and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav had earlier demanded Choudhary’s resignation, citing an older statement by the chief minister, which he made when he was deputy CM, in which he said he would resign if women faced such incidents. Opposition parties have also questioned why only one accused’s caste was highlighted and called the police action selective.
