JNU Student Harassed After 2 Youths Offer Her Alcohol in Car Near Tapti Hostel

A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student has alleged that two youths approached her near Tapti Hostel on the university campus and invited her to join them in their car for drinks. The student subsequently alerted campus security, following which Delhi Police reached the spot and took preventive action against the two men. According to reports, the incident took place late Monday night as the student was returning from Sabarmati Dhaba towards Tapti Hostel. The two men were allegedly sitting in a car parked near the hostel when they approached the student.

The student alleged that the youths invited her into the vehicle and offered her alcohol. She later informed a security guard about the incident, following which the university administration alerted the police. Police subsequently removed the two men from the area and detained them as a preventive measure. Delhi Police said that no formal complaint had been lodged by the student at the time of its initial response. A report by The Times of India said the university administration filed a police complaint through its security supervisor following the incident. Police, however, said that no FIR had been registered and that no complaint had been filed by the student herself. According to the police account cited by TOI, the two men were kept at the police station and later produced before a magistrate before being released on bail. The report also said the men were outsiders who had entered the campus to meet a JNU hostel resident.

The incident has also brought campus entry and security procedures under scrutiny. JNU's chief security officer said vehicles entering the university premises are recorded in an entry register along with details of the resident or person whom visitors have come to meet. Authorities are examining how the two outsiders entered the campus and the circumstances surrounding their presence near Tapti Hostel. The university's official hostel information lists Tapti among its residential facilities and shows it has a capacity of 386 residents. The allegations remain subject to further police and university inquiry. As of the latest reports, the student had not submitted a formal complaint herself, while preventive action had been taken against the two men.
