Background on the Kanwar Yatra
The Kanwar Yatra is an annual Hindu pilgrimage during the month of Shravan. Devotees known as Kanwariyas travel on foot from places such as Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri, carrying holy Ganga water to offer at Shiva temples. This year’s yatra begins on July 30, the first day of Sawan, and ends on August 11 (Chaturdashi), when the water is traditionally offered. A large number of participants are expected to pass through Delhi, with many continuing towards Haryana and Rajasthan. Similar restrictions and diversions have been announced in neighbouring areas, including parts of the Delhi-Haridwar corridor and Ghaziabad, where heavy vehicle movement faces curbs and some stretches will be reserved for pilgrims during peak days.
