A 19-year-old man wanted in 16 criminal cases, including two attempt-to-murder cases, was arrested after he allegedly tried to evade police by hiding inside a pond in Karnataka's Shivamogga district.

The accused has been identified as Dileep alias Kariya, a resident of Bhadravati. Police said he had been absconding for a long time and repeatedly avoided appearing before the court despite legal proceedings against him.

Acting on a tip-off about his whereabouts, the Bhadravati New Town Police launched an operation to apprehend him. When officers moved in to arrest him, Dileep allegedly attempted to escape by entering a pond and hiding in the water.

Dileep was subsequently taken into custody and produced before the authorities, police said.
The accused is facing 16 cases, including two cases related to attempted murder. His arrest follows a police operation aimed at tracking down the long-absconding accused after repeated failures to appear before the court.
