Davangere, January 30: A tragic double suicide has shaken Davangere district after a recently married woman eloped with her former lover, leaving two men dead within days and triggering widespread shock in the local community.
The incident involves 26-year-old H.G. Hanumanthappa, a resident of Karur village, who had married 21-year-old Yashoda around two months ago through an arranged marriage. The match was brokered by Hanumanthappa’s relative, 45-year-old Kadajji Parameshwarappa, who acted as the mediator between the two families. According to police, the couple was living together in Karur when Yashoda went missing last week. Hanumanthappa lodged a missing complaint, following which police traced the woman to Bengaluru. During questioning, Yashoda told authorities she had reunited with a man she was in a relationship with before marriage and clearly refused to return to her husband. ‘Was Supposed To Be My Daughter-in-Law’: Father of 6 Elopes With Minor Son’s ‘Fiancee’ in UP’s Rampur, Thrashes Wife for Objecting.
Police officials said the development left Hanumanthappa emotionally shattered. On Tuesday, he was found dead by suicide at his residence. Soon after, Parameshwarappa was also found dead in a separate suicide, with family members claiming he was burdened by guilt and social stigma over arranging the marriage.
Davangere police have registered two separate cases and are continuing investigations. The incident has once again highlighted the severe emotional and social pressures surrounding arranged marriages in rural Karnataka.
