The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has ordered the closure of Central Park in Delhi’s Connaught Place on October 16 and 17, ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ rally on Friday. The civic body cited administrative reasons for the two-day closure as authorities stepped up security arrangements in the area.

In a notice dated October 15, the NDMC said Central Park would remain closed to the general public on both days. The civic body also asked the police to ensure adequate security and prevent unauthorised entry into the park.  CJP’s ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ Rally: Central Park Shut, Section 163 in Force Ahead of Friday Protest.

CJP Calls for ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ Rally at 5 PM

The CJP has called on supporters to gather at Central Park in Connaught Place at 5 PM on October 16, carrying the national flag. Party founder Abhijeet Dipke has appealed to political parties and civil society groups to join the proposed gathering, urging them to set aside ideological differences.

The rally is linked to the party’s protests over the detention of its members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. The two were sent to five days of judicial custody over alleged violations of their peace bonds and their entry into Jantar Mantar, which Delhi Police has removed from its list of designated protest sites.

Delhi High Court Declines to Stop CJP Protest

The park closure comes after the Delhi High Court declined on Thursday to restrain the CJP and Dipke from holding the proposed protest at Central Park. The court recorded the Delhi Police’s assurance that it would take steps to regulate the gathering and maintain law and order. Delhi HC Records Police Assurance of Legal Measures Ahead of CJP’s Proposed Connaught Place Protest.

The matter came up after a Connaught Place street vendor sought intervention, citing concerns that a protest in the commercial hub could disrupt business and affect vendors during the festive season. The court did not issue an order prohibiting the proposed gathering.

Delhi Police Issues Advisory Amid Security Measures

Delhi Police has urged people to stay away from the proposed gathering amid prohibitory measures in Connaught Place and adjoining areas. However, the police indicated that a selected group of people could be facilitated to hoist the national flag and sing the national anthem at a suitable location, subject to the arrangements made by authorities.

The developments come amid continuing protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties and activists have raised concerns over the revision exercise, while the controversy has led to heightened security measures and restrictions on demonstrations in parts of the national capital.

The closure of Central Park is expected to affect public access to the venue on Friday and Saturday. The proposed October 16 rally remains at the centre of a wider dispute over protest arrangements, public access and security in Connaught Place.
