Mumbai, May 27: The India Meteorological Department on 26 May said that the landfall process of cyclone Remal commenced over coastal areas of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal. The met department added that it will continue for the next four hours. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to check the preparedness for Cyclone Remal. He said the Centre has extended full support to the state and must continue to do so.

As high temperatures scorch the Indian subcontinent, a heat wave coupled with warm nights and hot, humid weather will prevail over the next five days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued alerts to brace for extreme weather conditions across various regions. Rajasthan will face heat wave to severe heat wave conditions between May 26 and May 28, with temperatures hitting alarming highs in most parts of the state. Similar conditions are anticipated in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh, though a gradual reduction in intensity is forecasted after May 28, the weather department said.

The central government on Sunday extended the tenure of Army Chief General Manoj Pande for a period of one month. General Pande was to retire on May 31 after a 25-month tenure. "The Appointments Committee of Cabinet on May 26 approved the extension in service of Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj C Pande for a period of one month, beyond his normal age of superannuation (May 31), i.e. up to June 30, under Rule 16 A (4) of the Army Rules 1954," the Defence Ministry said in a statement.
