A man accused of stealing silver anklets from a 90-year-old woman was tied to a tractor-trolley, severely beaten, and allegedly tortured with a heated iron rod by locals in Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh district. The incident, which took place in Kharparas village under the Kalipeeth police station limits, came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media, prompting immediate police intervention and the registration of cases against both the theft suspect and his attackers.

According to local police, the chain of events began on the night of June 23, when the suspect, identified as Govind Verma, allegedly broke into the home of a 90-year-old woman who lives alone. Verma reportedly stole a pair of silver anklets from the elderly resident. However, the woman woke up during the robbery and raised an alarm, causing the suspect to flee the scene. The following day, a group of villagers tracked down Verma and took the law into their own hands. Instead of handing him over to local authorities, the mob tied him to a tractor-trolley and subjected him to a violent assault. A video captured by a bystander shows Verma bound with ropes and surrounded by an angry crowd. The footage depicts him being repeatedly assaulted and shows his legs allegedly being burnt with a heated iron rod. While some individuals in the video appeared to try and intervene to stop the violence, the assault continued without interruption for an extended period. Once the video began circulating widely on social media platforms, the Rajgarh police launched a formal investigation. Authorities confirmed that legal action has been taken against both parties involved in the dual incidents.

Acting on the complaint filed by the elderly woman, the police have registered a formal case of theft against Govind Verma. Simultaneously, law enforcement has cracked down on the vigilante violence. A separate case has been registered against four villagers identified in the assault. They face charges related to physical assault, alongside provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The investigation is currently being spearheaded at the Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) level. Officials stated that further strict actions will be taken as statements are recorded and additional suspects are identified from the footage.
