Mumbai, July 15: Four-wheeler vehicles clocking 120 kmph on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will no longer be penalised as the recent central government notification has raised the speed limit to 120 kmph, an increase of 40 kmph in the route. This development was announced by Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari a few days ago after a committee to examine speed limit on expressways and highways gave approval for the speed revision.

According to the recent notification, state-run and private buses can also travel at 100 kmph. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) officials said that they have received an intimation for the same. However, the official announcement of speed revision will be announced next week following some infrastructural changes, reported Pune Mirror. According to a report in Pune Mirror, Save Life Foundation, an NGO conducted survey revolving the risks on the route. The report concluded that speeding is the major problem as 65 per cent of four-wheeler drivers admitted to breaching the limit. The survey also revealed that more than 40 per cent commuters, including driver and front occupants, don't wear seat belts which is the prime reason for fatalities.
