Intense monsoon showers lashed Mumbai and its surrounding suburbs over the last 48 hours, triggering widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas and forcing authorities to shut critical traffic junctions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Traffic Police temporarily closed the arterial Andheri and Malad subways after water accumulation made the underpasses unsafe for vehicular movement, significantly disrupting the morning rush hour.

According to civic data, the severe downpour caused water levels at the Andheri subway to rise up to five feet, prompting immediate closure to prevent motorists from getting stranded. Traffic personnel were deployed at the entry points of both the Andheri and Malad underpasses to divert vehicles to alternative routes, leading to massive bumper-to-bumper congestion along the Western Express Highway and connecting links. Mumbai Rains: BMC Issues High Alert and Tidal Warning As City Braces for Extremely Heavy Rainfall Today (Watch Videos).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the heavy rainfall to an active offshore trough extending along the west coast. The weather bureau has placed Mumbai and neighboring districts, including Thane and Palghar, under an orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days.

The closure of these key subways has renewed long-standing concerns regarding the city's storm-water drainage capacity during peak monsoon spells. Municipal workers have deployed high-capacity dewatering pumps at the flooded sites to clear the subways, though continuous intermittent showers have slowed down the drainage operations. Apart from road blockages, commuters reported minor delays in suburban train services on the Western and Central lines due to water accumulation on parts of the tracks. The civic body has issued safety advisories urging residents to avoid low-lying, flood-prone areas and check official traffic updates before traveling.
