Mumbai Road Accident: BEST Driver Injured After Head-On Collision With Private Bus in Mulund

A BEST bus driver was injured after a private travel bus collided head-on with a BEST bus in Mulund West early Sunday morning, September 20. The collision occurred at around 5.50 am at Raily Wolf, where traffic had been restricted to a single lane because of ongoing Metro construction work on LBS Marg. A minor fire also broke out in the bonnet compartment of the BEST bus after the crash.

The injured driver was identified as 40-year-old Sandeep Namdev Karande, IANS reported. He suffered blunt abdominal trauma after the steering wheel struck him and also sustained an injury to his right leg that caused bleeding. Head-On Collision On One-Way Stretch in Mumbai

According to the BEST accident report, the BEST bus, registration number MH-01-DR-5024, was operating on Route 496/31 and travelling from SEEPZ towards Teen Hath Naka. The bus belonged to the Mateshwari (Majas) depot.

At the time of the incident, a private travel bus bearing registration number MH-09-FL-1044 was travelling in the opposite direction. The two buses collided head-on at the one-way traffic stretch near Raily Wolf. Driver Suffers Abdominal And Leg Injuries

The force of the collision caused the BEST bus’s steering wheel to hit Karande in the abdomen. The accident report said he suffered a blunt injury to his abdomen as well as an injury to his right leg, which resulted in bleeding.

Karande remained conscious after the collision and was reported to be in a stable condition. He was subsequently shifted to Agarwal Hospital in Mulund for further medical treatment.

The collision also caused a minor fire in the bonnet compartment of the BEST bus. The conductor responded immediately and used the fire extinguisher available on the bus to bring the flames under control.

Passengers also alerted the Fire Brigade about the fire. Firefighters reached the location, but according to the BEST accident report, the flames had already been completely extinguished by the time they arrived. The conductor then arranged for Karande to be transported to Agarwal Hospital.

Following the collision, several BEST and traffic officials were deployed at the scene. Traffic Officer No. 07 Khandge, Traffic Officer Shirsath from Mateshwari, Accident Inspector No. 73 and Bus Inspector No. 7909 from Mulund attended the incident.

The BEST Bus Control was also informed about the accident. Authorities requested an LM lorry/recker to remove the damaged BEST bus from the location and clear the road. Necessary mechanical assistance was also sought.

The accident occurred at a location where traffic movement had been reduced to a single lane because of ongoing Metro construction work on LBS Marg. The one-way arrangement was in place at Raily Wolf when the private travel bus and BEST bus collided.

The incident brought together traffic restrictions, two buses travelling in opposite directions and a head-on collision that injured the BEST driver. The circumstances leading to the collision are being examined as part of the accident assessment. The BEST report documents the driver’s injuries, the subsequent fire and the response by the conductor and emergency personnel.
