Mumbai and its surrounding regions are expected to receive pre-monsoon showers starting Friday, May 22, as rain activity over South Konkan gradually shifts northward, according to weather officials and local forecasts. The expected rainfall is likely to bring relief from the persistent heat and humidity that have gripped the city in recent weeks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also indicated that the southwest monsoon is progressing steadily and could arrive in Mumbai earlier than its official onset date.
Monsoon Likely Around June 5
“The onset of the southwest monsoon is expected in Kerala around May 26. If the monsoon progresses normally, it will arrive in Maharashtra around June 2 and in Mumbai around June 5,” said Bikram Singh, Director of the India Meteorological Department Mumbai.
The IMD had earlier forecast the monsoon onset over Kerala around May 26, with a margin of four days on either side. The weather system usually takes about seven days to move from Kerala to Maharashtra and another few days to reach Mumbai. The official monsoon arrival date for Mumbai is June 11. Last year, however, the city recorded its earliest-ever monsoon onset on May 26. Relief Expected From Heat and Humidity
Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are expected to see changing weather conditions later this week as moisture-laden westerly winds strengthen over the region. “The weather conditions are favourable for pre-monsoon showers. There is high moisture in the air with westerly winds. The maximum temperature will remain around 34-35°C. Humid conditions will prevail. But there will be no heatwave conditions,” Singh added.
The city has experienced prolonged discomfort due to high humidity and elevated night temperatures over the past several weeks. In March, Mumbai and the metropolitan region witnessed four heatwaves, a record for the period.
On Tuesday evening, May 19, Mumbai recorded a temperature of around 31 degrees Celsius while relative humidity levels hovered near 66 per cent. The IMD has maintained a yellow alert for the region, warning that the heat index remains significantly higher than the actual temperature.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to witness partly cloudy skies over the next 48 hours, with temperatures expected to remain between 27°C and 34°C.
Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Alerts Across Maharashtra
While Mumbai is expected to receive only scattered pre-monsoon showers initially, several parts of Maharashtra are already witnessing unstable weather conditions.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers at isolated places across South Konkan-Goa and South Madhya Maharashtra. Interior regions including Vidarbha, Marathwada and parts of Madhya Maharashtra may also witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
At the same time, severe heatwave conditions continue in parts of Vidarbha and central Maharashtra. Amravati recorded the state’s highest temperature at 46.8°C, followed by Wardha at 46.5°C. Temperatures crossed 45°C in districts including Nagpur, Akola and Yavatmal.
An orange alert remains in place for several Vidarbha districts as dry continental winds and clear skies continue to intensify heatwave conditions.
Monsoon Timeline for Mumbai

- Expected monsoon arrival this year: Around June 5 or 6
- Monsoon arrival in Mumbai last year: May 26 (earliest recorded onset)
Meteorologists say the progress of the monsoon over the Arabian Sea in the coming days will determine whether the early arrival forecast holds.
