A 38-year-old woman was allegedly dragged out of a car and repeatedly assaulted with a brick by her boyfriend following an argument in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, police said. The incident took place on Saturday evening while the two were reportedly on their way to Brahmavart Ghat in Bithoor.

According to police, the woman, who works at IIT-Kanpur, had locked herself inside the car in an attempt to protect herself after the argument escalated. However, the accused allegedly smashed the vehicle with a brick two or three times before opening the door, dragging her onto the road and repeatedly striking her on the head and other parts of the body.

Hearing her screams, passers-by rushed to the spot, overpowered the accused and allegedly thrashed him before informing the police. Police identified the accused as 38-year-old Devashish Nigam, a resident of Swaroop Nagar. Investigators said he had picked up the woman from the main gate of IIT-Kanpur before the two drove towards Brahmavart Ghat, where the argument reportedly began.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said a case was being registered based on a complaint filed by the victim's family.

"Investigation is underway and all aspects are being examined," the DCP said.

Police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the alleged assault.
